Stuttgart Christmas Market

During Advent, around 280 decorated stands transform the Stuttgart Inner City into one of Europe's biggest and most beautiful Christmas Markets. The Marktplatz, Schillerplatz and Schlossplatz, as well as Hirschstraße and Kirchstraße are all given over to spreading some welcome pre-Christmas spirit with festive lighting. The air is thick with the aroma of cinnamon and vanilla, the scene comes alive with sparkle and glitter. The countless traditional wooden hut stalls are decorated with angels, fir branches and baubles, and Christmas music is all around.

The variety of goods on offer ranges from Christmas tree decorations through toys and woodcrafts to lambskin slippers, hats, candles and puppets. And to keep hunger at bay during the cold season, gingerbread, burnt almonds and roast chestnuts are on offer. Swabian culinary specialities, grilled sausages, mulled wine and punch are also essential ingredients of the Christmas Market.

A fairy tale grotto is set up on the Schlossplatz for children to enjoy a magical Christmas experience. The popular miniature railway drawn by a real steam locomotive travels through the snowscape, old-fashioned children's carrousels, a big wheel and fairy tale figures turn a visit to the Christmas market into a special experience for the young.

The Stuttgart Christmas Market is mentioned in documents dating as far back as 1692. Today, the attraction draws crowds of around three million visitors to Stuttgart every year from the last Thursday in November to the 23rd of December.
