Film and media

Stuttgart enjoys an international reputation as a film and media location. This is ensured by a large number of film and media companies, top-class industry events and pioneering festivals. The city's diverse cinema culture also offers cinematic entertainment. Film off!

The Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH organizes, among other things, the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film. With around 1,000 films, it is one of the most important and largest in the world.

Film and Media City Stuttgart

In addition to the public broadcaster Südwestrundfunk and private radio and television stations, Stuttgart is also home to numerous film production companies, publishing houses, high-tech and IT companies, and advertising agencies. Prestigious training centers for specialists in the creative film and media sector include the  Hochschule der Medien (opens in a new tab), the  Merz Akademie (opens in a new tab), the  Hochschule Macromedia (opens in a new tab) and the  media Akademie Hochschule Stuttgart (opens in a new tab).

In addition, a wide range of film festivals, congresses and projects in the field of media art enliven Stuttgart's cultural life. Support is provided by the City of Stuttgart's  cultural sponsorship in the form of institutional funding as well as funding measures for projects and cultural workers from the film and media industry. The Cultural Office also acts as a consultant and oversees a large-scale network throughout the cultural life of the state capital.

Film festivals and events

Every year in spring, the world's elite of animators make a pilgrimage to Stuttgart, because then, for six days, the  International Festival of Animated Film (opens in a new tab) and the  FMX - Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Immersive Media (opens in a new tab) turn Stuttgart into the capital of digital entertainment. Stuttgart is also the venue for Europe's largest  Indian film festival (opens in a new tab). The  Stuttgart Film Winter (opens in a new tab)is the most important festival for short and experimental film in southern Germany and is one of the most renowned events for media art.

The  Filmschau Baden-Württemberg (opens in a new tab) is a showcase for current film productions from the German southwest. And the  Stuttgart Children's Film (opens in a new tab) Festival combines the experience of cinema with exciting learning spaces, creating a special  cultural experience for children.
