Integration through Education

A conference on Integration through Education was held in Stuttgart in fall 2004, where the promotion of young migrants' education was discussed and a forum for the exchange of best practice experience was provided.

Results

• Promoting the official language helps to improve chances of migrants and minorities on the job market and gives a perspective for higher education. However these measures are more effective when they are supplemented by educative initiatives of migrant organizations.

• A cooperation of public institutions with migrant organizations seems to produce better results than the pure delegation of tasks to migrant associations. An important element of local integration policy should therefore be the networking of migrant initiatives, government institutions and all others in the field as well as the coordination of jointly developed and organized projects.
