IVLZ - Challenges and achievements

Four operators per shift, made up of one representative from each of the IVLZ partner organizations, work together in the control room of the Integrated Traffic Management Centre. Their close physical proximity makes for a fast, simple exchange of information, allowing any problems on Stuttgart's road and rail system to be quickly recognized and resolved - often before they have a chance to develop.

The IVLZ is required to respond to a widely varied range of different events which can potentially impact on the city''s traffic. On a yearly average, the following events occur:

  • 22.500 accidents
  • 4.300 wide or heavy loads
  • 1.800 events (on public spaces)
  • 200 events in halls, markets and stadiums
  • 14.500 construction sites (only on priority roads)

Tangible success - improved mobility in Stuttgart

The IVLZ''s integrative approach has proven successful from the outset: By reducing or even preventing congestion, it has been possible to bring about a general improvement to the flow of traffic in the city, benefiting not only individual road users but also the bus and tram network.

The IVLZ

  • issues radio bulletins informing drivers directly of any unforeseen traffic problems.
  • intervenes up to 21 times a day to control or redirect both private road traffic and public transport. 15 of these incidences involve adjustment to traffic light programs.
  • indicates alternative routes.
  • intervenes in case of serious disruption to the local public transport network (in individual cases this can cut delays by half).
  • ensures that around 14 to 29 kilometres of traffic jams are prevented or dissipated every day.
  • cuts waiting times for traffic flowing away from major events by around half (for example around the NeckarPark events complex).
