Stuttgart Free College of Art

Development of independent forms of expression

The goal of Stuttgart Free College of Art is to offer up-and-coming artists both an art and craft education and also to give them the mental ability to visually tackle an art assignment. The course is intended to prepare students in the following disciplines:

  • painting, free graphics, sculpture, material and constructive art, stage design, monumental painting (wall and façade design), photography, multimedia, art appreciation;
  • graphic design, industrial and product design, architecture and interior design, jewellery design, textiles design, ceramics.
Students are first of all given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the entire range of forms of artistic expression, before they focus on the study of specific artistic disciplines to which their talents are suited.

In the foundation course, portfolio preparation and painting/free graphics, the course is taught in the form of practical exercises, lectures on the theory of art and drafting seminars. The course content is offered both on a group basis and also as individual teaching. Intensive support and personal meetings are key components of the joint work and are characteristic of the atmosphere at Stuttgart Free College of Art. Students may study more than one subject within the varied course content. Right from the outset, the focus is primarily on the main objective of art teaching, namely the development of independent, personalised forms of expression.

Study duration

The basic course covers two semesters. On the one hand it acts as portfolio preparation for the application to an art academy or technical college, and on the other hand it forms the basis for the main study painting/creative graphics at the Freie Kunstschule Stuttgart.

The main study - including the basic course - extends over eight semesters before concluding with an examination, which is comprised of a written conception and a practical art work cycle. A diploma is awarded after passing the examination.

Also the 'seniors' among students, who usually do not associate any professional intentions with their study, use the main course to further improve their artistic expression.
