Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst

The State University of Music and the Performing Arts is conveniently located in the center of Stuttgart along its "culture mile", directly next to the Neue Staatsgalerie, the Haus der Geschichte and the State Library and only a few minutes' walk away from the opera, the theater and the main railway station. Founded in 1857 in a hired hall, State University of Music celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2007, making it the oldest such institution in Baden-Württemberg. In 1996 it took up permanent residence in its current functional and imposing premises on the Urbanstraße.
The central focus of the university building, designed by the architects James Stirling and Michael Wilford, is an imposing tower, symbolizing in equal measure the preservation of culture and cultural innovation, as it unites old music, classical and romantic music, new and contemporary music, puppet theater, symphony music, opera and drama, electronic music, jazz and organ music under its roof.

In addition to the library, the tower also accommodates the big Concert Hall with its 500 seats. Next to the Chamber Music Hall with its 180 seats the Concert Hall is the center of university life.

Music practice and teaching take place almost round the clock in the 240 rooms of the State University of Music and the Performing Arts with its eleven organs and 250 pianos. 750 students from 42 nations are taught by 178 professors, lecturers and teaching assistants. With around 450 annual events, held in the university's three concert halls and in the neo-classical Wilhelma Theater, the State University of Music and the Performing Arts is an important element of Stuttgart's cultural life, offering innovation and a wide choice of music and other cultural events. Nowhere else are there so many recitals of rarely heard music, so many extraordinary soloists and so many unusual events.
