PhD

The PhD acts as proof of ability for in-depth scientific research. It is based on independent scientific work - the dissertation with essential new results and an oral examination. A PhD is attained following successful completion. Universities and peer colleges are authorised to award PhDs.

Writing the thesis usually takes several years, except for the medical thesis which can normally be finished during study.

With few exceptions the PhD is a requirement for a scientific career and normally requires one of the other college qualifications. In Germany a PhD is always a prerequisite for the Habilitation (postdoctoral university degree with lecture qualification).
