Residence permits for students

First issue of residence permit (new arrivals)

For first issue of a residence permit please go to any "Bürgerbüro" (citizens' advice bureau) in the city. Here, you will be able to organise your official registration for residency and apply for the residence permit.

Requirements

In order to ensure this procedure can be carried out quickly and smoothly, it is essential to show the following documents:

• A filled in registration form (for place of residence in Stuttgart !)
• A valid entry visa for a course of study or a language course followed by a course of study
• Your valid passport
• Confirmation of your admission to the university or college ("restricted admission") or German intensive language course
• Confirmation of your health insurance cover
• A biometric passport photo, please see:

Extending your residence permit

When your residence permit is due for extension, you will receive a letter well in advance, informing you of the documents you require for this process. At the same time, you will be allocated an appointment at which you must appear in person. If you do not receive this letter in good time before your residence permit expires, you should contact the public authority responsible for aliens (Ausländerbehörde) as soon as possible in order to make an appointment.

Requirements

It is essential to show the following documents at this appointment:
Your current record of study (current confirmation of registration - Immatrikulationsbescheinigung), or for non-degree students evidence of the reason for and duration of your stay

• Evidence of financial support
  • Bank statements from the last three months with regular incoming payments
    or
  • Current bank statement
    or
  • Valid statement of commitment to provide financial support
    or
  • Valid confirmation of grant/scholarship
• Certificate of German language examination for university admission
• Valid passport with valid residence permit
• Confirmation of your existing health insurance cover
• For postgraduate students, evidence of progress on your dissertation
• After graduation, if applicable, evidence that you are actively seeking employment
• A biometric passport photo, please see:
