Priority checks on Scharnhauser Straße

Scharnhauser Straße in Plieningen has been closed to most motorized traffic since May, but is still regularly used by private vehicles. The Stuttgart city council is now taking action against this with priority checks.

Since the southern bypass (pictured) in Stuttgart-Plieningen was built, Scharnhauser Straße has been closed to through traffic.

The completed construction of the Plieningen southern bypass now offers a better route for through traffic. This means that the new L1192, built parallel to the highway, is available as an alternative. It is intended to relieve Plieningen. For this reason, Scharnhauser Straße between the end of Plieningen and the junction with the K1217 has no longer been open to general traffic since mid-May. However, it is still required for public bus routes and agricultural traffic. Because of these exceptions, there can be no road closures.

Obviously, however, many drivers do not respect the ban and use the section of Scharnhauser Straße for through traffic without permission. Although the Stuttgart Municipal Enforcement Service and the police have repeatedly carried out spot checks on site, there has been no significant improvement so far, according to the Public Order Office.

Phase of intensive controls

Now, a phase of intensive checks by the mobile speed enforcement team is intended to prevent this behavior and increase awareness of the regulations now in force there. The first phase will begin on Tuesday, July 22, with a focus check that will record all vehicles passing through. The checks are to be repeated several times in the following period. Depending on further developments, a semi-stationary system could also be placed there for a longer period of time until the regulation is adequately observed.
