The new indoor pool is being built using modular timber construction and is characterized by a high degree of prefabrication. The modules are largely completed in the factory and assembled on site in a short space of time. This significantly reduces the construction time compared to conventional construction methods. Wood plays a central role here: it is used in the load-bearing structure as well as in the façade and in the substructure of the stainless steel pool. The project thus makes an important contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions and developing a circular construction method.
A special feature of the project is its flexibility. The pool can be completely dismantled and, after its use in Zuffenhausen, can also be rebuilt at other locations during the replacement construction of the Zuffenhausen indoor pool. At present, two further locations are planned for the future in Stuttgart: First in Möhringen, to be available there as a replacement water area during the replacement new construction of the Sonnenberg indoor pool, and then at its final location in the parking lot of the Untertürkheim island pool as a replacement for the Untertürkheim indoor pool. In this way, the building can be used for many years to come where the need for a replacement water area is particularly great. The dimensions of the water surface are 25 meters long and 12.5 meters wide. Completion at the Zuffenhausen site is scheduled for mid-2026.
Part of the International Building Exhibition 2027
The mobile indoor pool is part of the IBA'27 network, the International Building Exhibition 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart. The IBA'27 network brings together a wide variety of forward-looking projects from the Stuttgart city region. The mobile indoor swimming pool fulfills the IBA'27 guiding principle of making the unusual and new possible and visible.
The state capital of Stuttgart is the client of the project, which is being realized by POOL out of the BOX GmbH as the total contractor. Other project partners are 4a Architekten GmbH, Blumer Lehmann AG, ZELLER Bäderbau GmbH, Kannewischer Ingenieurgesellschaft and Wassertechnik Wertheim GmbH.
The start of assembly work marks an important step towards completion. The mobile indoor swimming pool is an example of sustainable construction, innovative technology and future-oriented urban development in Stuttgart.
