Lime becomes new partner for the bike rental system in the Stuttgart region

The partner for the future bike rental system in the Stuttgart region has been decided: from January 2027, the provider Lime will offer pedelecs for rental. The system will replace the RegioRad service. In future, it will offer citizens a sustainable and comprehensive mobility solution.

Lime launches bike rental in Stuttgart from 2027 with 1000 pedelecs. The current 300 or so parking spaces in Stuttgart and the region are to be gradually expanded - particularly in residential areas.

Comprehensive offering in the Stuttgart region

35 cities and municipalities in the Stuttgart region have already joined the new system. The overall coordination of the project remains with the state capital of Stuttgart, where there has been an internal change: since January 2025, the micromobility team in the Office of Public Order has been responsible for the inter-municipal project. "With the new bike rental system, we are taking an important step towards sustainable mobility in Stuttgart," says Susanne Scherz, Head of the Office of Public Order. "Lime is a useful addition to our range of services and offers people in the city a clever alternative to the car."

Sustainable, flexible mobility for all

Lime is starting with 2000 pedelecs, 1000 of them in Stuttgart. The system is accessible around the clock via a user-friendly app. The pedelecs can be borrowed in designated areas and parked there again. Regulated parking zones and a digital control system guarantee smooth operation and a tidy cityscape. The pedelec batteries are interchangeable, eliminating the need for a permanently installed infrastructure, as is the case with RegioRad. "Our aim is to integrate the Lime fleet seamlessly into existing mobility services and offer a flexible and low-emission alternative to the car," says Rania Bouaouina, Public Affairs Manager at Lime. "We rely on modern fleet management and clear rules."

New concept for storage areas

The Lime-Pedelecs use the existing RegioRad parking spaces that are currently available in the participating cities and municipalities. There are currently around 130 parking spaces in Stuttgart and a further 170 in the region. At the end of the contract with RegioRad, the DB Connect charging facilities will be dismantled. The Lime pedelecs do not require fixed charging stations. In order to continue to meet the demand for parking spaces, these will be gradually expanded - especially in residential areas. There will also be so-called virtual pins: Parking spaces that are only visible in the app and are not physically marked.

Operating concept was the deciding factor

Lime prevailed in a transparent selection process in which the sustainable operating concept, the technical equipment of the pedelecs, cross-community operation as well as safety and maintenance concepts were particularly decisive. The reliability of the customer and complaints service also played a key role.
