Born in Brandenburg, she moved from Berlin to Stuttgart with her husband in 1968 and was first elected to the city council for the SPD in 1999. In the 2004 municipal elections, she was re-elected and became deputy parliamentary group leader. She was a member of the municipal council until 2014.
As spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group in the committees for economy and housing as well as culture and media, she focused her work on promoting the economy and supporting numerous cultural institutions and initiatives. She was a strong advocate for vocational training and a member of the school advisory board.
Monika Wüst’s commitment to local politics began in 1993, when she joined the SPD Stuttgart-Ost and shortly afterwards became its chairwoman. In 1994, she became a district councilor in Stuttgart-Ost. Being close to the citizens was her most important concern, in order to formulate goals together with the people, to convince others and to push them through - be it on the topics of quality of life in the districts, childcare, schools or affordable housing. She founded the “Arbeitskreis Linie 15” (Line 15 Working Group), which was successful in its demand that the line be expanded into a light rail system.
Monika Wüst is honorary First Chairwoman of the Stuttgart Cultural Forum and an active member of the senior citizens’ working group at the Stuttgart SPD. In spring 2017, she was a founding member of the Stuttgart group of the pro-European citizens’ movement “Pulse of Europe”.
Monika Wüst’s hobbies are cooking, eating with friends, traveling, and gardening. She also collects and restores old textiles.
