Housing benefit plus

With “Housing Benefit Plus”, the federal government launched a comprehensive housing benefit reform on January 1, 2023. Due to the increase in rents and prices since then, Housing Benefit Plus will be adjusted to this development on January 1, 2025, so that many households can receive a higher housing benefit.

You can use a housing benefit calculator to check whether you could be entitled to housing benefit. In 2023, around 7,000 households in Stuttgart received housing benefit. (symbolic image)

On the one hand, from January 1, 2025, those who submit a new or first housing benefit application will benefit from the housing benefit increase. On the other hand, existing housing benefit recipients whose approval period ends in 2025 will also benefit.

In these cases, there is no need to submit a new housing benefit application in order to receive the higher housing benefit; instead, there is a transitional arrangement under which a new housing benefit notice will be issued ex officio in January 2025.

The calculation will be made on the basis of the previously stored data using the increased calculation bases. If this results in a higher housing benefit entitlement, this will be granted ex officio from January 2025 and the difference will be paid retroactively from February 1, 2025.
