Medical care for children and adolescents in Stuttgart is facing growing challenges. There are many reasons for this: among other things, the conditions for setting up a practice make access to new practices more difficult. In addition, more and more doctors are retiring and there are too few new doctors to fill pediatric practices.
To counteract these deficits, Mayor Dr. Alexandra Sußmann and Mayor Thomas Fuhrmann launched the round table "Pediatric and adolescent medical care in Stuttgart" in 2022. All stakeholders involved in the provision of care have compiled possible measures, which are now being successively implemented. The public health department is supporting and coordinating these measures.
Other municipal departments have also been supporting the improvement of outpatient care for years. For example, medical needs are already taken into account in urban planning. In addition, the city's business development department offers a contact point with a pilot function in the administration for interested doctors.
Support measures
In order to increase incentives for doctors and thus improve medical care for children and young people, the municipal council has decided on a funding program funding program. 260,000 is available for this in the 2024/2025 double budget. These funds are intended to improve the conditions for setting up a practice, support practice takeovers and provide financial support for part-time positions.
