Support program for electric tricycles

To make the switch to a more environmentally friendly means of transportation more attractive for people with limited mobility, the state capital of Stuttgart is promoting the purchase of a new electric tricycle, also known as an e-trike. The aim is to make the e-trike a real alternative to public transport.

Stuttgart residents with limited mobility can receive a grant from the city to switch to an e-trike.

E-trikes are basically e-bikes with three wheels: in other words, three-wheeled bicycles that are also equipped with an electric drive and can travel at speeds of up to 25 km/h. As they are not considered motor vehicles, they are not subject to registration.

Promotion of e-trikes for people with reduced mobility

The continuation of the "E-trikes for Stuttgart residents with limited mobility" funding guideline was approved by the municipal council up to and including 2025. Funding is now also available for so-called handbikes. The aim of the guideline is to support all Stuttgart residents with limited mobility when purchasing or leasing an e-trike (electric tricycle).

The amount of the grant is 1,500 euros, up to a maximum of 50 percent of the proven purchase costs of the e-trike. In return, the recipient of the grant undertakes to use the subsidized e-trike in their own household in Stuttgart for at least three years and to display a sticker indicating the subsidy from the state capital.

In addition to the basic grant, a further 500 euros will be paid out on application as a"sustainability bonus" at the earliest three years after the purchase of the e-trike, provided that no car was registered in the applicant's household during this period or a car has been deregistered without replacement in the last three years and no other car has been registered for a period of at least three years after deregistration.

Promotion with a social component

Since people with particularly low incomes and without significant financial reserves cannot economically afford to purchase their own e-trikes even with a subsidy of 1,500 euros, the subsidy has a social component (social bonus). This component is based on the assumption that people with Stuttgarter FamilienCard and Bonuscard + Kultur require special financial support.

The social component provides that the basic subsidy of 1,500 euros is increased by a maximum of 1,000 euros for households with a Bonuscard + Culture and a maximum of 500 euros for households with a FamilyCard. The total subsidy with social bonus thus amounts to a maximum of 2,500 euros for households with Bonuscard+Culture and 2,000 euros for households with FamilyCard.

The sustainability bonus of 500 euros is already included in the social bonus and will not be paid out additionally later to avoid overcompensation.

To avoid undesirable developments, the absolute funding level is set at 90 percent with Bonuscard+Culture and at 70 percent with FamilienCard. This ensures that the applicants always make up a certain personal contribution. The state capital Stuttgart can, for example, envisage an installment agreement with the supplying bicycle dealer for this personal contribution.
