Once rejected by Stuttgartians as "Swabian Morocco," it is now considered one of the most important architectural monuments of the modern era. Sixteen architects from five European countries built the model houses for the Werkbund exhibition DIE WOHNUNG in 1927. 11 of 21 houses have been preserved, namely the homes of Mies van der Rohe, Stam, Behrens, Scharoun, Frank, Le Corbusier, Schneck, Oud and Bourgois. In 1997, the Weissenhofsiedlung as a whole was entered in the register of monuments. Whereas the protection of monuments had previously already applied to the individual buildings erected as part of the Werkbund exhibition "Die Wohnung," it is now extended to include the historic routing, including street surfacing and parcelling, as envisaged in Mies van der Rohe's development plan.
