Wash car or bike

When washing vehicles or bicycles in the city of Stuttgart, the following points must be taken into account:

Vehicles and bicycles may only be washed on a paved area that is connected to the public sewer system. The resulting wastewater must be discharged via the sewer system so that it can be cleaned in the sewage treatment plant. Engine washing is not permitted.

Notes
:

  • The cleaning of vehicles and bicycles in a car wash or at a designated washing area is preferable from a water management point of view, since the wash water is treated there and used several times.
  • If possible, only biodegradable cleaning agents should be used.
  • Special requirements apply to car/bicycle washes on a commercial scale.
  • Vehicles and bicycles must not be washed in sub-zero temperatures. Because of the subsequent icing, the street or sidewalk otherwise becomes a slippery slope.
  • From the point of view of road law, private car or bicycle washing at the roadside is part of the so-called public use and is not prohibited in the city of Stuttgart, provided that the above-mentioned requirements are met.
  • In numerous municipalities outside Stuttgart, private car washing is prohibited. Please inquire at the respective mayor's office about the regulations that apply there.
  • Washing vehicles and bicycles on unpaved surfaces can be punished with a fine if cleaning agents, fuel or lubricants get into the groundwater.
