Young climate activists score points with green ideas

Young Stuttgart residents have impressed with their extraordinary ideas and surprised everyone with clever ways to save energy. At the annual event of the "Lukratives Energiesparen in Stuttgarter Schulen" (LESS) project on June 3, 28 schools presented their projects in the town hall.

The city has awarded a total of 25,000 euros to the best ones.

The Mayor for Urban Development, Housing and the Environment, Peter Pätzold, said: "The commitment of Stuttgart's schools is impressive. The ideas and projects are a fine example of how young people can actively shape their future in an environmentally friendly way and take responsibility for climate protection. These schools are role models for us all!"

LESS has been motivating pupils to actively integrate climate protection into their everyday school life for 16 years. The municipal project promotes creative measures to save energy and increase energy efficiency - with an impact far beyond the classroom.

Three projects received a special prize. Feuerbach secondary school developed the idea of using sustainable energy at school events with the help of a solar stove. Hölderlin-Gymnasium integrated a traveling exhibition from Ferdinand-Porsche-Gymnasium into the classroom, where 18 classes were able to experience climate education through experiments and tasks. Parents were also deliberately approached about climate protection at the open day. At Fanny-Leicht-Gymnasium, pupils designed their school grounds with self-made planters, shade-giving and insect-friendly planting and a rainwater tank for irrigation.

"LESS" is open to all municipal schools. The aim is to sensitize the school community to the issues of energy efficiency, energy saving and climate protection - and to show that everyone can make a difference. It is possible to join the project at any time, and the rewards generated can be used freely by the schools.

Interested schools should contact the Office for Environmental Protection. Information material on the project can be found at: https:  //www.stuttgart.de/leben/umwelt/energie/energie-projekte/energiesparen-in-schulen.php
