State capital Stuttgart awarded silver certificate by ADFC as a "bicycle-friendly employer"

The state capital of Stuttgart has been awarded the silver certificate as a "bicycle-friendly employer" by the German Cyclists' Federation (ADFC). The certification applies to two buildings: the city treasury in Eichstraße and the Main and Personnel Office in Katharinenstraße.

Kathleen Lumma, State Director of the ADFC Baden-Württemberg, presented the certificate to Dr. Fabian Mayer, First Mayor of the state capital.

"Promoting cycling is an integral part of our HR strategy. After all, good working conditions are not only created at the desk - they also include how we get to work. For many colleagues, cycling is a healthy, flexible and climate-friendly choice," emphasized Dr. Fabian Mayer, First Mayor of the state capital. "We are delighted with this recognition and see it as an incentive to further expand our commitment to a bicycle-friendly city."

"The city of Stuttgart has implemented comprehensive measures for its employees to establish cycling as an attractive and safe part of the journey to work," emphasized Sara Tsudome, project manager at the ADFC. "This commitment not only contributes to the health of employees, but also strengthens the city's position as a progressive and environmentally conscious employer."

With its certification as a "bicycle-friendly employer", the ADFC aims to support companies and institutions in becoming more bicycle-friendly and making it easier to commute to work by bike. The certification is awarded on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation system. This includes the availability of well-equipped bicycle parking spaces, changing facilities and the introduction of company bicycles.

"Bicycle-friendly companies are future-oriented and increase employee loyalty and satisfaction," said Kathleen Lumma, State Director of the ADFC Baden-Württemberg. "With company bikes, special campaigns and suitable infrastructure, they specifically promote the health of their employees and improve their
ecological footprint."

What distinguishes Stuttgart as a bicycle-friendly employer

A large number of measures in the buildings mentioned are evaluated for certification as a "bicycle-friendly employer". Specifically, these were

  • Provision of well-equipped and sufficient bicycle parking spaces
  • Changing facilities and showers for cyclists
  • Programs such as the leasing of company bicycles
  • Support for mobility initiatives, for example the annual city cycling campaign
  • Targeted information and campaigns: Brochures for new employees, route advice with a special bike map, campaign day with gifts for cyclists, information day on company bikes, further training on employee mobility.

Background: The "Bicycle-friendly employer" certificate

The "Bicycle-friendly employer" certificate is the EU-wide certification that has been awarded in Germany by the German Cyclists' Federation (ADFC) since 2017. The aim is to make companies and public institutions visible with their commitment to promoting cycling and to motivate others to follow suit. Larger organizations in particular - including numerous cities, districts and municipal companies - rely on this award to raise their profile as a sustainable and employee-oriented employer.

Certification is based on a structured test procedure: first, the organization evaluates how bicycle-friendly its structures and measures already are as part of an online self-assessment. The underlying questionnaire covers a wide range of fields of action - from infrastructure and communication to offers such as company bikes or bicycle services. If enough criteria are met, an on-site audit is carried out by an independent ADFC auditor. Depending on the number of points achieved, the certificate is then awarded in bronze, silver or gold. It is valid for a period of three years. Certification is also possible for organizations with several locations - either for the entire company or, as in the case of the state capital, specifically for individual properties. In this way, employers can set accents where exemplary conditions already exist or special mobility concepts have been implemented.
