They show that the pop-up cycle lanes have not only led to an actual improvement in safety for cyclists, but have also significantly increased cyclists' subjective perception of safety. This was also reflected in the increasing number of cyclists on the route. The originally formulated goal of improving safety for cyclists was therefore successfully achieved.
The pop-up cycle lanes were set up along Böblinger Straße between Christian-Belser-Straße (Waldeck) and Burgstraße/Schwarzwaldstraße (Dreiecksplätzle). The reason for this was the increasing number of rule violations, in particular the failure of motor vehicles to keep the legally prescribed overtaking distance from cyclists.
Despite the positive safety development, there is criticism of the measure, as the evaluation also shows. In particular, the loss of parking facilities and the restrictions on delivery traffic in Böblinger Straße are viewed negatively by many residents, businesses and motorists. These aspects will be followed up in further discussions, particularly with tradespeople.
Based on the positive results and the safety targets achieved, the city council has decided to make the pop-up cycle lanes on Böblinger Straße permanent. The measure will therefore continue to make an important contribution to promoting cycling and road safety in the future. "The cycle lanes have proven to be an effective measure for improving cycling safety," emphasized Peter Pätzold, Mayor for Urban Planning, Housing and the Environment. "We will continue to focus on the needs of all road users and look for solutions that create a good balance between the various requirements."
