Stuttgart introduces state-wide volunteer card

The state capital of Stuttgart is participating in the state-wide introduction of the Baden-Württemberg volunteer card. This was decided unanimously by the Stuttgart City Council at its meeting on July 31. The aim is to visibly recognize and strengthen people's voluntary commitment.

Almost a third of Stuttgart residents aged 16 and over are actively involved in Stuttgart's urban society.

The volunteer card is a joint project of the state of Baden-Württemberg and the participating municipalities. It offers committed citizens exclusive discounts and benefits, particularly in the areas of culture, education and sport. The prerequisite for receiving the card is a voluntary, community-oriented commitment of at least 200 hours in the last twelve months (or 100 hours in the case of project-related commitment).

"Almost a third of Stuttgart residents aged 16 and over are actively involved in our urban society. This commitment deserves recognition and visibility," says Dr. Fabian Mayer, First Mayor of the state capital Stuttgart. "With the introduction of the volunteer card, we are sending a clear signal of appreciation."

Some offers in the state capital already accept the card

The state capital of Stuttgart will now coordinate the implementation of the measure with the state and begin to develop the offer. The volunteer card is to be introduced this year and will initially run until the end of 2027. The necessary personnel and material costs will be covered by state funds and within existing budgets. There are already around 120 acceptance points across the state, including several in Stuttgart - such as the Junges Schloss children's museum, the Linden Museum, the Württemberg State Museum and the Stuttgart State Gallery. The aim is to continuously expand the network and attract further partners from the fields of culture, education, sport and leisure.

A comprehensive evaluation of the project will take place in 2026 and 2027, which will also incorporate the experiences of cardholders, organizations and acceptance points. This will serve as the basis for a decision on a possible continuation of the measure from 2028.

As soon as it is possible to apply for the volunteer card, the state capital of Stuttgart will provide information via its communication channels. Further information on volunteering in Stuttgart can be found at  www.stuttgart.de/buergerengagement.
