Lapidarium

A mute bronze knight stands guard at the entrance and a stone "Gradulator" welcomes visitors. The Municipal Lapidarium looks like an enchanted garden that wants to be awakened from its slumber. The flair of the open-air museum is reminiscent of Italy.

The Municipal Lapidarium was designed on the model of Italian Renaissance gardens, with a walkway, terrace and centuries-old sculptures.

The small park below the Karlshöhe is enchanting with its sculptures and winding paths. Around 200 exhibits are waiting to be discovered in the municipal lapidarium. Like a stone picture book, together they tell 500 years of the city's history. Some of the most exciting chapters include a jasper bowl owned by Queen Olga of Württemberg, a lintel from the former Hohe Karlsschule and a portal from the Hoppenlau Cemetery.

The grounds themselves are also worth seeing: laid out in 1905 as a private park by Karl von Ostertag-Siegle based on the model of an Italian Renaissance garden, they already housed a collection of Roman fragments at the time. When the state capital of Stuttgart acquired the garden in 1950, the Municipal Lapidarium was created here. Today, the walkway, the terraces, the fountain courtyard and the old trees invite you to forget time and immerse yourself in Stuttgart's city history.
