Appreciation of the 2023 award winner
The state capital Stuttgart congratulates author Svenja Leiber and translator Thilo Diefenbach on winning the Cotta Prize 2023!
Svenja Leiber receives the Cotta Prize for her generational novel "Kazimira", set in the Kaliningrad region and published by Suhrkamp Verlag, 2021. With this award, the jury honors Thilo Diefenbach for his translations of a large number of Taiwanese texts into the exceptionally diverse "Anthology of Taiwanese Literatures. Zwischen Himmel und Meer", published by iudicium Verlag, 2022.
The award ceremony took place on November 14 with around 250 guests in the main conference room of Stuttgart City Hall. Head of the Cultural Office Marc Gegenfurtner welcomed guests to the ceremony and congratulated writer Svenja Leiber and translator Thilo Diefenbach on their award: "Literature is an essential cultural achievement that mediates and opens up the world, and not just in the current times. The works of Svenja Leiber and Thilo Diefenbach honor literary achievements that help us to broaden our view to the East and thus deepen a clear piece of world competence."
The evening was hosted by literary editor and presenter Katharina Borchardt, who talked to the two prizewinners about the two works and had them read from them. Stuttgart musician Laima Adelaide was invited to provide artistic input, inspiring the audience to produce their own images with music and words in a live music video performance.
