Cultural Offer Literature: How Stuttgart Reads

More than almost any other form of expression, literature is a mirror of society and an important testimony to cultural history. Reading is a personal, almost intimate form of reception and offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in new worlds and to view one's own with different eyes. Reading aloud and reciting shares and expands this experience.

For people looking for inspiration and exchange, or simply to be literarily entertained, there is a varied and inspiring cultural offering in the field of literature in the state capital. Information about the literary scene in Stuttgart and the region is available from the  Stuttgart City Library (opens in a new tab), among others. Anyone interested in literary events can browse the city's  calendar of events . And the  culture finder offers an additional insight into the city's literary offerings.

Cultural promotion and literary awards

Cultural funding is important for a lively literary scene. The city of Stuttgart supports players in the literary scene and thus promotes the diversity and breadth of what is on offer. An important component of the city's promotion of literature are the literary prizes and scholarships: Every three years, the city awards the  Johann Friedrich von Cotta Literature and Translator Prize and the  Hegel Prize of the State Capital Stuttgart. The  Hannsmann-Poethen literary scholarship is awarded every two years to an author and an artist as a cross-disciplinary tandem scholarship.

Literary institutions

In the Stuttgart region, over 200 publishing houses publish around 300 newspapers and magazines and 5,000 book titles every year. This makes Stuttgart one of the cities with the most publications in Germany. 66 bookshops are available to Stuttgart's citizens with an interest in literature. And Stuttgart's cultural institutions make an important contribution to literary life with readings, lectures, exhibitions and workshops. These events are firmly anchored in the city's cultural landscape and are very popular.

A central institution for the dissemination of literature is the Stuttgart City Library, including district libraries and book buses.
