Dental health

For the dental health of your child, the first months of life already count. That's why the health department invites all Stuttgart parents with their toddler to a preventive dental consultation. It also offers numerous other dental health services.

Those who learn to brush their teeth properly at an early age will have healthier teeth later on.

Healthy teeth from the beginning

We will inform you about everything you need to know about dental health, answer your questions and offer an examination of your child if you wish. Take up this offer, because for the development of healthy milk teeth and thus also for the permanent teeth, good preventive care from the first months of life is the most important thing. To make an appointment, please call us. You will find the contact details at the bottom of the page and in the flyer "The 1x1 for children's teeth consultation".

Parents can do a lot to prevent their child from developing cavities and to keep their teeth healthy:

  • Start regular tooth cleaning as soon as the first milk tooth erupts.
  • Make brushing your child's teeth a ritual, for example with a little song.
  • We advise against the use of toothpastes with a sweet taste.
  • Until the child reaches the age of 2, we recommend brushing twice a day with a "grain of rice-sized" portion of fluoride-containing children's toothpaste (1,000 ppm) or, if fluoride tablets are given, a fluoride-free toothpaste.
  • From the child's 2nd birthday until he or she is 6 years old, your child should brush his or her teeth twice a day with a "pea-sized" portion of fluoride-containing children's toothpaste (1,000 ppm fluoride).
  • Brush your child's teeth at least once a day until school age - preferably in the evening - after

Dental health services

Dental damage can be avoided through early and targeted prevention. This is why the health department of the state capital Stuttgart, together with the dental health department and the Stuttgart Dental Health Working Group, is committed to maintaining and promoting dental health among Stuttgart's children and young people.

The dental health services include

  • Examination of kindergarten and school children
  • Detection and care of children at risk of caries
  • Caries prophylaxis programs of the dental health working group
  • Consultation hours for parents of infants and toddlers
  • General information on dental health
  • Expert opinions for the Office for Social Affairs and Participation, the Youth Welfare Office and subsidy offices

In addition to the annual dental check-up, children with a high risk of tooth decay are offered specific prophylaxis programs. The preventive measures are implemented by dentists and dental assistants.

The focus of the work is the comprehensive dental examination of children starting school. In addition to teaching units on oral hygiene, the development of tooth decay, fluorides, nutrition and practical exercises on correct tooth brushing, all programs include enamel hardening with fluorides as a central component.
