The work thus shows an integrated vision of the future for the long-neglected urban space as well as concrete spatial solutions for dealing with the infrastructures and land potential along the Neckar.
Across the various levels from the entire Stuttgart Neckar region to individual areas, a holistic perspective for sustainable further development along the Neckar has emerged. The concept study complements the Masterplan Erlebnisraum Neckar and shows which areas and strategies can contribute to achieving two central objectives: A livable and productive city with open spaces along the river and the transformation to a climate-neutral city.
The concept study is the result of a joint production between the Urban Planning Institute of the University of Stuttgart and the Office of Urban Planning and Housing. It is based on the WECHSEL research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, with the participation of experts and citizens. The interdisciplinary project examined the connections between the energy industry and urban development. It looked at the urban impacts of the energy transition and took an early look at opportunities for integrated development. The insights gained have been reconciled with existing urban planning and requirements.
The concept study presents the contradictions and charms of the space along the Neckar River and also offers insights into the eventful infrastructure and planning history. Along the energy-economical basic conditions most different topics from the mobility turn and the economic structural change over the integration of the industrial architecture and the climatic-ecological challenges up to questions to the use of the areas the topics are thought together and spatially linked. The concept study "Stuttgart am Neckar" consists of a brochure and a strategy plan.
In the context of the overall city development, the concept study deals with which requirements and key points should apply to this development area, which is important for the city as a whole, in preparation for the process for the urban development concept 2035+.
