Under German law, first names can be rearranged (= the order of first names can be changed).
Changing the spelling, adding new first names or omitting first names is not permitted.
Prerequisites
You use your name under German law and have several first names.
Procedure
You can make a name declaration at any German registry office, but it only becomes effective when it is received by the registry office that keeps your birth register.
If your birth is not recorded in a German birth register, the registry office that recorded your marriage / civil partnership is responsible for the effective receipt.
If this office is also not located in Germany, the registry office of your place of residence is responsible for the effective receipt of your declaration. Only then can a certificate of the name change and, if requested, a new birth or marriage certificate be issued. With such a document, you can apply for a new identity document.
Required documents
- Valid identity card or passport
- Current original birth certificate or certified copy from the register of births (available from the registry office in whose district you were born)
- If you are married, also an original marriage certificate or a certified copy of the marriage register
Note
- If your birth or marriage was recorded at the registry office where you wish to submit the declaration of name, some of the above documents are not required.
- If you were born or married abroad, a translation and legalization of the documents may be necessary.
- Further documents may also be required.
