African swine fever (ASF) occurs in domestic pigs and wild boar and is usually fatal. The viral disease must be reported! Currently, there are neither vaccines nor cures against it. Other animals and humans are not susceptible to the animal disease.
Germany has the first confirmed cases of ASF since September 2020: in Brandenburg, ASF has been detected in wild boars a few kilometers from the German-Polish border. Apparently, infected animals had migrated to Germany from the neighboring outbreak area in Poland.
Note: The disease is now widespread in numerous Eastern European countries. From there, the disease can spread to other areas over long distances at any time, especially through contaminated pork products that are brought home and improperly disposed of or even fed to the animals.
For effective disease control in feral pigs, it is very important that feral pig carcasses are found and recovered early so that they do not serve as a source of infection for other pigs.
ATTENTION: Please report dead wild boars immediately, even in a state of advanced decomposition! Please keep your distance from the carcass so that you do not carry the pathogen on shoes or clothing.
If you discover a dead wild boar, please contact the veterinary office immediately with as precise a location as possible (for example, GPS data obtained via cell phone or a Google Maps screenshot with a marked "parking lot") and your contact information or via the app "Tierfund-Kataster".
The app is available for download in the Apple (opens in a new tab) and Google (opens in a new tab) app stores.
