As a married couple, you already have a married name under German law before 01.05.2025 and would like to change it or, as a married or formerly married person, you have a double name under German law and would like to return to your married name (= revoke the addition of the accompanying name).
The same applies to the use of a name in a registered civil partnership.
Prerequisites
The declaration on the change/revocation of the married name can only be made jointly and personally by the spouses.
The declaration to revoke the double name can only be made personally by the spouse who has added his/her name to the married name.
Procedure
- You can submit a name declaration at any German registry office.
- If you need an interpreter, please bring one with you to the appointment.
- However, the declaration only becomes effective when it is received by the registry office that keeps your marriage register.
- If your marriage was not notarized in a German marriage register, your local registry office is responsible for the effective receipt of the declaration.
- Only then can a certificate of the name change and, if requested, a new marriage certificate be issued. With such a document you can apply for a new identity document.

- Valid identity card or passport of the person(s) making the declaration
- Current original marriage certificate or certified printout from the marriage register
(available from the registry office where the marriage took place).
Note
- If the marriage was entered into at the registry office where the declaration on the use of name is to be submitted, the above-mentioned documents are not required.
- If the marriage took place abroad, a birth certificate as well as a translation and legalization of the documents may be required.
- Further documents may also be required.
