You would like to give your child a double name under German law from 01.05.2025, which is made up of the names of both parents with a hyphen (or without a hyphen if you wish).
If the name of one parent consists of several elements, only part of it can be used to form the birth name.
Prerequisites
You have joint custody and do not have a married name.
You have sole custody and do not have a joint name with the other parent.
Procedure
You can submit a name declaration at any German registry office.
If you need an interpreter, please bring him/her with you to the appointment.
However, the declaration only becomes effective when it is received by the registry office that keeps the child's birth register.
If the child's birth is not recorded in a German birth register, your local registry office is responsible for the effective receipt of the declaration.
Only then can a certificate of the name change and, if requested, a new birth certificate be issued. With such a document, you can apply for a new identity document for your child.
Required documents
- Valid identity card or passport of both parents
- Current original birth certificate or certified printout from the child's birth register (available from the registry office in whose district the child was born)
- If you are married: marriage certificate or certified printout from the marriage register (available from the registry office where you got married)
- If you are not married: Acknowledgment of paternity and proof of joint custody as well as birth certificates or a certified printout from the birth register of both parents (available from the registry office in whose district you were born)
Note:
- If the birth or marriage was recorded at the registry office where the declaration on the use of name is to be submitted, some of the above documents are not required.
- In the case of births abroad, a translation and over-certification of the documents may be necessary.
- Further documents may also be required.

You can make an appointment online (opens in a new tab) at the Stuttgart registry office if you got married in Stuttgart city center, if your child was born in Stuttgart city center or if you live in Stuttgart city center.
