If your name has changed (e.g. after marriage or divorce) or you have been awarded an academic title (such as a doctorate), you can exchange your old driver's license. There is no obligation to exchange.
If you keep your old driver's license despite a change of name, it is important that you can present an identification document showing the name on the driver's license in the event of a check.
Prerequisites
- You have changed your name or been awarded an academic title.
- You have a valid driver's license.
- You have not been banned from driving by a fine authority.
- Your main residence is in Stuttgart.
Procedure
- You can submit the application at any citizens' office or driving license office.
- You can have your driver's license sent directly to you by post from the Bundesdruckerei or collect it from the driving license office or a citizens' office for a small additional fee.
Required documents
When applying for a change of name:
- Identity card/passport.
- Previous driver's license.
- Extract from the local driver's license register (so-called index card copy), if the previous driver's license was not issued in Stuttgart.
- If the name change has not yet been entered in the personal document, you will also need:
- in case of marriage: certified copy of the marriage certificate.
