• Your main place of residence is Stuttgart
• You have a valid foreign driver's license

• Application to the driver's license office.
• The probationary period depends on several factors and is therefore examined in each individual case by the driver's license office and decided according to the legal requirements.

• Identity card or passport
• First confirmation of registration in Germany
•  1 biometric passport photo PDF-File 1,38 MB
• Foreign driving license with translation (if no EU/EEA driving license)
•  Application for a domestic driver's license - transfer of a foreign driver's license PDF-File 145,06 kB  (PDF) (opens in a new tab)

• Certificate or expert opinion on physical and mental fitness.
• Certificate or expert opinion on eyesight.

ATTENTION: You only have to present these certificates or reports if an extension of the validity of a driving license of classes C or D (including trailer and/or subclasses) is necessary at the same time as the exchange.

In the case of a non-EU/EEA driving license that is not listed in  Annex 11 of the Driving License Ordinance (opens in a new tab), depending on the class applied for:

• Certificate or expert opinion on physical and mental fitness: only for class C+D, or DE + DE.
• Certificate or expert opinion on eyesight or an eye test certificate.
• Proof of training in first aid.
• Indication of the driving school, as you also have to take the theoretical and practical driving test.

• The right to drive with the foreign driver's license is valid for six months after registration.
  
• Upon application, the driver's license office can extend the period by up to six months.
  

• To do this, you must prove that you will not have your residence in Germany for longer than twelve months.
