Every one of us can lose something, and everyone is happy when they get back what they have lost. The legal code formulates a claim to finder's reward. Any costs or expenses over and above this must be settled between the owner and the finder.
The statutory finder's reward (§ 971 BGB) for lost property is as follows
- up to a value of 500 EUR: 5 percent of the value.
- above a value of 500 EUR: 5 percent of the value plus 3 percent of the added value.
- For animals, the finder's fee is 3 percent of the value.
