If you sell your vehicle, you must inform the registration authority as soon as possible - this is done, for example, by means of a purchase agreement. You are still registered as the keeper with the registration authority after the sale. This applies until your vehicle is deregistered or transferred to another person. Only then do your obligations as keeper also end.
Important: As long as the vehicle has not been re-registered or deregistered, the previous vehicle owner is still subject to tax and insurance obligations!
Tip: Deregister your vehicle before selling it. This applies especially if you sell the vehicle abroad. This is the best way to protect yourself from the threat of having to continue paying the vehicle tax and any claims from your vehicle insurance.

You enter your data on the platform of the service portal of the state of Baden-Württemberg www.service-bw.de (opens in a new tab).
As a rule, you must set up a personal service account on the service portal to submit your application. This allows you to start, edit, temporarily save, and also submit your application. The Ministry of the Interior of Baden-Württemberg is responsible for processing your data in the service account.
Procedure
If only the sale of the vehicle is to be reported to us:
- You give the contract of sale or the notice of sale: Either in person or by a person representing you (without power of attorney).
- You send the contract of sale / notice of sale by mail, e-mail or fax.
If the vehicle is to be deregistered:
Note: The notification of sale should be completed in full, i.e. the following information must be included:
- Naming of the official license plate including the vehicle identification number,
- the previous vehicle owner (seller),
- the future vehicle owner (buyer) incl. the complete address data,
- the receipt of the vehicle documents must be indicated
- the date of the sale,
- and both parties (seller and buyer) must sign.
Please note the instructions on the back of the registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration certificate) and do not forget to hand over the current main inspection report to the buyer.
Incomplete notices of sale or incomplete contracts of sale cannot be used.

At the moment, waiting times of up to 2 hours must be expected at the citizens' offices. In the event of very high visitor numbers and the associated longer waiting and processing times, the issue of waiting tokens must regularly be stopped before the end of office hours.
Passport and registration matters are currently being processed as a priority. If you visit the Citizens' Office in connection with registering or re-registering your place of residence or applying for an ID card or passport, you can also deal with your registration matters there. For registration matters on your own, please contact the registration office.
