Request conversion to marriage
A life partnership is similar to a marriage.
In the past, 2 people of the same sex were not allowed to marry.
But they could have a registered life partnership.
Since October 2017, 2 people with the same sex are also allowed to marry in people.
You live in a registered life partnership?
Then you can change the life partnership into a marriage.
To do this, you must submit an application.
Only after that you have the marriage before the registrar official.

You have your life partnership converted into a marriage?
Then you have the rights and obligations since the time of the life partnership.
Note:
You have chosen a surname at the time of the life partnership.
This surname is still valid after the conversion into a marriage.
What is the procedure?
You can apply for the conversion from a life partnership to a marriage together with your partner. You do this at the registry office of your place of residence. Or at the registry office of your partner's place of residence. You can then perform the marriage ceremony at any registry office in Germany.
Required documents
For the application to convert from your life partnership to a marriage, you will need these documents:
- A valid identity card or passport.
- A proof of your nationality.
- A new certificate of your life partnership.
- You have not made your life partnership at the registry office where you are now?
Then you need a certified printout from the Civil Partnership Register.
An extended registration certificate from your registration office.
The extended registration certificate must not be older than 4 weeks.
The extended registration certificate is not the same as the residence permit for persons from abroad.
A simple registration certificate is not sufficient.

Then the other must bring a power of attorney.
A power of attorney is a kind of letter.
With the power of attorney you have permission
to do or decide something for your partner.
However, the power of attorney always counts only for a certain thing
Notarized means:
An official person must confirm,
that the copy says the same as the original.
This can be done by the employees at the registry office.
