If you live in a registered civil partnership, you can convert the civil partnership into a marriage. You must apply for this conversion. Only then does the independent ceremony of marriage take place before a registr ar.
Note: The rights and obligations of the spouses go back to the date on which the civil partnership was entered into.
Note: The name given in the civil partnership continues to apply.
Prerequisites
You live in a registered civil partnership.
Procedure
- Both partners can apply for the conversion of the civil partnership into a marriage together.
- The desired conversion of the existing civil partnership into a marriage is applied for at the registry office where one or both partners reside. If the partners live in different places, they can choose at which registry office they want to apply for the conversion.
- The marriage can take place in any German registry office.
Required documents
- valid identity card or passport
- Proof of citizenship
- currently issued civil partnership certificate or
- if the existing civil partnership was not established at the registry office where the conversion of the civil partnership into marriage is applied for: a certified printout from the civil partnership register
- extended registration certificate from the registration office, which is not older than four weeks. It is not to be confused with residence permits for foreign nationals. In some municipalities, the registry office can print out the extended registration certificate for you. A simple registration certificate is not sufficient.
- a completed and signed power of attorney of the person who cannot be present in person at the registration of the marriage at the registry office.

There is no time limit for converting an existing civil partnership into a marriage.
