In order to protect against the spread of animal diseases, every animal keeper is obliged to notify the competent authority. This regulation is laid down in the Livestock Traffic Ordinance. The obligation to notify applies even if the animals are only kept for hobby purposes.
Cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, solipeds, chickens, ducks, geese, pheasants, guinea fowl, partridges, pigeons, turkeys, quails, ratites and bees are generally considered livestock. There is also an obligation to register the keeping of fish if they are kept for commercial reasons or if they are kept in a body of water connected to natural waters.
Relevant changes - for example, regarding the type and number of animals kept - must also be reported by animal keepers.
