Identity card - change of address

If you move house, you should have the address on your ID card and the ID chip changed.

Tip: It is advisable to change the address on your ID card at the same time as re-registering or deregistering your place of residence. If you register or re-register using the  electronic residence registration (opens in a new tab) system, you can change the address on the chip yourself online. In this case, the address label will be sent to you automatically by post by the Bundesdruckerei

Note: Germans living abroad do not need to have their address changed on their ID card if they move abroad. Your document will either state "no home in Germany" or, since 01.11.2019, the address abroad.
