Duty to clean, clear and grit

The cleaning, clearing and gritting duties on sidewalks are important aspects of urban infrastructure and public life. They not only ensure cleanliness and order, but also pedestrian safety.
During the winter months, the focus is on the obligation to clear and grit, and during the rest of the year on cleaning the surfaces. Regular cleaning of sidewalks, especially after stormy days or in the fall, is necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of pedestrians.
The duty to clear and grit in winter is particularly important. To ensure that no one is harmed in snowy or icy conditions, road users are obliged to clear and grit sidewalks, footpaths, shared footpaths/cycle paths and areas at the side of the road to a width of 1.50 m. If snow falls or ice forms on the pavement, it must be cleared and gritted.
If snow falls or ice forms on the sidewalks, the road users are obliged to remove this source of danger.
According to the municipal bylaws, a road user is any owner or occupier (including tenants and leaseholders) of land adjacent to a road.
To avoid slippery roads, only approved de-icing materials such as sand or grit may be used. Salt or other thawing substances may only be used in exceptional cases in the event of freezing rain.
Footpaths and other areas must be cleared and gritted by 07:00 on Mondays to Fridays, 08:00 on Saturdays and 09:00 on Sundays. The obligation ends at 21:00 in the evening.
Compliance with the cleaning, clearing and gritting obligation is not only a question of cleanliness, but above all a question of safety.
