Strict regulations apply to travel with pets such as dogs, cats and ferrets to prevent rabies, but these may vary from country to country. Therefore, it is important that you thoroughly inform yourself about the existing regulations for the different travel countries before you start your journey.
Travel within the EU
If you want to travel with your dog or cat within the European Union, you need an EU pet passportwith a valid rabies vaccination. This is issued in Baden-Württemberg by all practicing veterinarians. The animals must be marked with a microchip. Excluded are animals that were clearly legibly tattooed before July 03, 2011.
Travel outside the EU
When traveling to so-called third countries, the requirements of the respective country apply. If you want to enter the EU with your pet from a listed third country, then the EU pet passport with valid rabies vaccination is sufficient or if the animal was vaccinated abroad, an official health certificate. Special requirements apply to non-listed third countries. A current list of (opens in a new tab) listed third countries can be found at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
Information on the requirements of non-EU countries can be obtained from consulates, embassies or the official websites of the respective travel countries.
