The tasks of the Roads and Traffic department include project development as well as the planning and construction preparation of all measures in the public road space. The projects are often supervised until completion. In detail:

• Redesign of roads with traffic calming
• Construction of traffic circles
• Urban redevelopment of squares
• Construction of cycle paths and cycle garages
• New construction and expansion of access roads
• Street lighting and directional signage

The department is also responsible for technical traffic management in the city. This essentially involves the creation of signal programs as well as the planning, construction and operation of all traffic engineering facilities. In detail:

• Traffic signal systems and traffic computers
• Electronic display boards (Vario boards) and traffic control systems
• Digital parking guidance systems
• Recording and processing of traffic data, traffic observation cameras
• Partner in the integrated traffic control center
• Technical parking management (operation of parking machines)
• Electric barrier systems (operation of bollards)

The department also performs key tasks for the road authorities

• Dedication and confiscation of roads under road law
• Subsidies
• Road statistics
• Provision of data and information
