The Urban Green Department plans, builds and maintains public green spaces/parks, play areas, street greenery and areas of nature conservation/landscape protection/ecological importance according to design, functional and ecological aspects. Over 150,000 trees in public areas and along roads are monitored and maintained.
Traditional graves and new, maintenance-free types of graves are offered at 41 municipal cemeteries. Dignified burials are made possible by the municipal burial service according to different ideological beliefs or religious rites. War/honor graves, memorials, Jewish and historical cemeteries are cared for and a crematorium is maintained.
Stuttgart's municipal forest is maintained and managed sustainably, taking into account the demands of recreation and leisure use, nature/species conservation, the need for timber production and sustainability.
The city nursery and a composting operation are also operated.
