E-cargo bikes: municipal support for families and single parents in high demand

The "E-cargo bikes for Stuttgart families" funding program continues to meet with great interest. Almost 1,900 applications have been received between its launch in 2018 and the end of 2023.

So far, more than 1,500 families have received funding. As a result, the "E-cargo bike funding for Stuttgart families" funding guideline adopted by the municipal council is therefore a great success. Its continuation until at least the end of 2025 was already decided in summer 2023.

The aim of the funding program is to reduce environmentally harmful emissions in Stuttgart in order to make the city more liveable and healthier. In addition, e-cargo bikes are to be made visible as a practical and climate-friendly means of transportation in everyday life. The program also aims to encourage people to switch to bicycles, not least because this has a positive impact on health.

The funding program is aimed at families and single parents with their main residence in Stuttgart with at least one child under the age of 18 in the household. If they wish to purchase an e-cargo bike and use it for at least three years, they can apply for a grant. The basic grant amounts to 600 euros. There is also a social component, which provides additional financial support for lower-income families to purchase a new e-cargo bike: With a valid FamilienCard, a further 1,300 euros are possible, and with a "Bonuscard + Culture" up to an additional 2,000 euros. The cargo bike can be purchased or also acquired as part of the company bike leasing scheme. It is important that the application for funding is submitted first and that the bike is only ordered or the leasing contract signed once the funding approval has been received.

In addition to the basic subsidy, a sustainability bonus of 500 euros can be applied for after three years if either no car is available in the household since using the e-cargo bike or a car has been deregistered without replacement. In the case of social subsidies, the sustainability bonus is already included in the additional subsidy and is no longer paid out additionally.

The subsidy can be applied for purely digitally via the state-wide online platform Service BW (Serviceportal Baden-Württemberg). All further information on the funding program can be found on the Internet at  www.stuttgart.de/lastenrad
