The state capital Stuttgart is one of Germany's largest wine-growing communities due to its climatically favorable location in the Neckar Valley. Wine is grown in 16 of the 23 city districts. One vineyard is located in the middle of the city center, a few meters from the main train station. Numerous vineyards in the state capital are also cultivated by the Stuttgart city winery (opens in a new tab), which has been in existence since 1949. When a city is so connected with viticulture, a wine festival cannot be missing.
The Stuttgart Wine Village has been held every year since 1974 from the end of August to the beginning of September. During these days, around 120 decorated wine arbors stretch from Marktplatz to Kirchstraße and Schillerplatz, inviting visitors to make themselves comfortable. The "Hocketse", as this typical tradition of southwest Germany is also called, offers regional food and wine.
Hundreds of wines from Baden-Württemberg can be tasted here. Traditional Swabian dishes are also served. In addition to the opening ceremony in the courtyard of the Old Palace, one of the main attractions of the festival is the pressing of grapes on the steps in front of Stuttgart City Hall.
