City districts

Münster

Münster is the smallest district of Stuttgart and is located directly on the Neckar River. The boundaries of the district have changed several times over the centuries. Starting in the 1950s, neighboring districts came into being and received parts of the district. Münster became smaller in area, the development possibilities limited.

Vineyards at Schnarrenberg in Münster: A branch of the German Weather Service is also located there.
BMX supercross track allows big jumps: The track in Stuttgart-Münster was built as a training track for competitive athletes.
The legendary monk: After a bet, he is said to have transported a stone far into the district of Mühlhausen and thus marked the "new" border to Münster.

History

Historians assume that there were already settlements in the area that is now Münster in Celtic times. The first documented mention dates back to 1193, when Münster was listed among the possessions of the Lorch monastery.

The place name is derived from the Latin word "monasterium" (monastery). The early history is characterized by the Pfleghof of Lorch Monastery, which was probably built in 1473. From here, the monastery collected the taxes in kind due to it from numerous communities around Münster.

Originally a farming and winegrowing village, the town developed rapidly at the beginning of the 19th century. This was boosted by the construction of the 855-metre-long König Wilhelm Viaduct in 1896 and the Untertürkheim-Kornwestheim railroad line built in 1895.

In Austraße/Jagststraße, there is a plaque indicating the former terminus of the first suburban streetcar line outside the Stuttgart district boundary, which began its scheduled service on May 16, 1909.

Today

"Münster - surrounded by Neckar and vineyards" is the current short description of the district. Through the Future Workshop 2009, in cooperation with volunteers, the HGV Stuttgart-Münster e.V. and the district town hall, a monthly district newsletter was created, which is distributed to households free of charge. With the same actors, our citizens' information brochure was created, which is given to every newcomer in the welcome folder.

The Elise von König School started as Stuttgart's first community school with the 2013/2014 school year. Münster has also become a university location since 2014 thanks to the Private University of Communication and Design. In 2018, the starting signal was given for the Social City. Here, citizens have the opportunity to actively participate with their ideas in the urban district.

In 2018, the BMX track was inaugurated, which is unique in Germany and also offers training opportunities for Olympic conditions. The following year, the German championship was held on the track.

The location on the banks of the Neckar River with the water playground makes the district popular with walkers and athletes. But also a trip to the vineyards (Schnarrenberg) and to the weather station offers worthwhile views.
