Mayor Wölfle presents prize money to citizen rickshaw in Vaihingen

The “TrotzAlter: unabhängig, mittendrin 2017” project for health promotion and addiction prevention for people aged 55 and over in the Vaihingen district was awarded the Great Prevention Prize of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation for Health Prevention.

The health office received prize money in the amount of 5000 euros for initiating offers. The office now makes the money available to the cooperation partner and association “Bürger-Rikscha gemeinsam in Bewegung”. The mayor for social affairs and social integration, Werner Wölfle, presented the prize money on November 19 at the Paritätisches Mehrgenerationenhaus Vaihingen. The money will be used to maintain the electric vehicle recently donated by Daimler AG and handed over to the association by the community foundation.

Werner Wölfle, Mayor for Social Affairs and Social Integration, said, “Within the framework of ‘TrotzAlter’ it became apparent that rickshaw use improves the quality of life of older people in the Vaihingen district in many ways. The greater participation in life influences the self-image and the image of old age, as a result of which many seniors have more confidence in themselves again. In order to be able to participate in social life for as long as possible, such special local offers are needed.”

The city of Stuttgart sees the new electric vehicle that the Citizen Rickshaw Association has received from Daimler AG as a great opportunity for the further development of the service. Compared to the rickshaw, the e-vehicle can also be used in unfavorable weather conditions and can also better cope with “peak times”.

Citizen rickshaw background

The association “Bürger-Rikscha gemeinsam in Bewegung” (Citizens’ rickshaws on the move together) offers older and less mobile people an opportunity to participate more in life in the city district with its wheels. Each rickshaw ride is a shared active experience in which older people who are more or less housebound experience a new form of mobility.

Sons, daughters or grandchildren, friends and neighbors, pedal along, bringing joy to their passengers. Each ride is an enrichment for family gatherings and outings. Besides, the rickshaw is environmentally friendly, healthy and a form of modern mobility from citizens for citizens in the district of Vaihingen.
