Place of social debate

In this reporting period, the Stuttgart City Archive once again discussed key social issues at events and exhibitions.

One highlight was the event with Charlotte Isler in October 2023. She was born in Stuttgart on November 24, 1924 and was expelled from Stuttgart as a result of the pogrom on November 9, 1938. Her family managed to flee to the USA.

In her memoirs, which have been published in German translation as volume 115 of the Stadtarchiv's publication series, Charlotte Isler recounts her childhood in her home town in the late 1920s and early 1930s. After the National Socialists came to power, the living conditions of her Jewish family changed dramatically and they were subjected to increasing discrimination and open hostility.

On October 13, 2022, a conference on the history of homelessness from a historical and current perspective took place in the city archive on the occasion of the acquisition of a thematically relevant bequest.
Homelessness is a historical phenomenon with a long history. At the same time, unlike other risks of human existence, it remains an unsolved social problem.
In a panel discussion with historian Dr. Martin Ulmer and the state government's commissioner against anti-Semitism Dr. Michael Blume, the city archive recalled anti-Semitic riots in Stuttgart in 1873 in March 2023 under the title "The forgotten pogrom".

Education and mediation at the city archive as a place of learning

The City Archive's educational and outreach work was significantly expanded once again thanks to the newly created position of archive educator in 2022. Very different groups, including preparatory classes and trainees, were able to get to know the possibilities of the archive in an action-oriented way, tying in with their own questions, experiences and interests. The existing collaborations with a wide range of institutions were expanded through the educational partnership concluded with the Königin Olga-Stift in June 2023, which includes regular offers in the city archive for five year groups. New modules were also created, for example on colonial references in Stuttgart's past.
