Infection control

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Sex is the most beautiful thing in the world. But unfortunately, diseases such as HIV, syphilis or gonorrhea can also be transmitted during sex. The Stuttgart public health department provides information about sexual health, offers advice and tests for sexually transmitted infections.

Condoms are still the best protection against sexually transmitted infections.

Transmission and symptoms

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infectious diseases that are transmitted through sexual contact. Many sexually transmitted infections are initially asymptomatic and those affected do not notice anything, but can still infect others.

A consultation and a test can clarify whether you may have been infected.

The Stuttgart public health department offers anonymous and free tests for the following sexually transmitted infections (STIs):

  • HIV
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea (gonorrhea)
  • Syphilis (Lues)
  • Hepatitis, possibly also vaccination (if you do not have health insurance)
  • and other diseases (depending on risk and symptoms)

Condoms are still the best protection against sexually transmitted infections. Condoms protect against HIV and reduce the risk of infection with sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia.

HIV/STI counseling and testing: Appointments

The Stuttgart public health department offers a combined HIV antibody-antigen screening test, which requires an interval of six weeks from the last risk contact. HIV tests are anonymous and free of charge at all health authorities in Baden-Württemberg. Only in exceptional cases, including visa applications, are the tests carried out by name and then at a charge.

Please remember that an HIV test should only be carried out 6 weeks after the last risk contact (last unprotected sexual intercourse, sexual intercourse with a broken condom) in order to obtain a reliable result. We will discuss further tests for other sexually transmitted infections during the consultation. Please also bring your  vaccination certificate, if available, to the test.
