To make sure you don't run out of juice: there are around 500 charging points for electric cars in public spaces in the Stuttgart city area. There are also additional charging facilities in parking garages and at businesses.

Plug in, charge up, drive off! There are charging stations for electric cars all over Stuttgart.

Over 500 AC charging stations are in operation in public spaces in Stuttgart, which corresponds to around 1,000 charging points. This is because each charging station is usually equipped with two charging points. According to the  Federal Network Agency (opens in a new tab)(as of July 2025), more than 3713 AC charging points are now accessible to everyone. They are located at the roadside, in parking garages or parking lots, at retailers, companies, petrol stations or car dealerships.

DC fast-charging points are being built in public spaces at 20 locations. In addition, high-performance charging parks are already available in semi-public areas, e.g. at Hedelfingerstraße 17, Schelmenwasenstraße, Keplerstraße and Rotebühlhof.

Compared to other municipalities, the city of Stuttgart is the leader in terms of publicly available charging infrastructure. Stuttgart now ranks first among the major cities in Baden-Württemberg with the most charging points. In a nationwide comparison, Stuttgart is also the metropolis with the densest publicly accessible charging network in relation to its population. Only Berlin has more charging points in absolute terms.

The charging stations for cars are equipped with at least type 2 plugs in accordance with the charging station ordinance.

Construction and operation of charging stations

The state capital of Stuttgart promotes electromobility by supporting private operators in the installation and operation of charging stations in public spaces. In particular, it provides space in public areas for this purpose. Interested charging point operators can use these areas to invest in publicly accessible charging infrastructure.

The state capital of Stuttgart has designated a total of 500 possible locations for normal charging infrastructure and 20 for fast charging infrastructure in public spaces. Interested citizens can use the map below to see where locations are planned and have already been implemented in the city.

The experience gained from the expansion phase to date is currently being evaluated and discussed in the relevant municipal council committees. Based on this, the concept will be further developed and the charging infrastructure will be further densified. The installation of a further 500 charging points was approved by Stuttgart City Council in June 2024. The implementation of this 2nd major expansion phase is now underway.
