Energy saving in schools

Conscious use of resources starts at school. This is why the city of Stuttgart supports schools in using energy and water responsibly. The "Lukratives Energiesparen in Stuttgarter Schulen" (LESS) project invites school classes to discover their own energy consumption.

The Mayor for Urban Development, Housing and the Environment Peter Pätzold (center, 2nd row) congratulated the 28 participating schools and presented the awards at the annual event of the LESS project on June 3, 2025 in the town hall. Dr. Jürgen Görres (right, 2nd row from top), Head of the Energy Department at the Office for Environmental Protection, was also present.

The Office for Environmental Protection and the School Administration Office support schools in reducing their energy and water consumption with the LESS project. The aim of the project is to anchor the topics of energy saving, sustainability, resource and climate protection in schools. Pupils should discover energy-saving potential themselves and develop measures to reduce the consumption of energy and water in schools.

The LESS project aims to ensure that the everyday behavior practiced in schools is also applied in the pupils' private environment. At the same time, it aims to raise awareness of the fact that the raw materials and energy sources available on earth are finite. In this way, LESS makes an important contribution to environmental and climate protection both inside and outside schools.

As part of the LESS project's annual event in June 2025, 28 successfully participating schools received certificates as well as bonuses and special prizes for special projects totaling over 25,000 euros.

You can join LESS at any time

As an incentive, the schools receive a share of the energy costs saved, which they can dispose of freely. In addition, all schools are rewarded via a points system for their educational activities in raising awareness of ways to save energy.

Other schools can join the project at any time. To do so, Stuttgart schools can contact the Office for Environmental Protection. The contact person is  Sandra Langer or  lessstuttgartde
